Spain through to quarter-finals: 3-0 demolition of Austria, Oyarzabal brace and Unai Simón breaks Casillas record

Through to the round of 16 and no scares, mate! Spain hammered Austria 3-0 in Los Angeles and finally lifted a weight off their shoulders: it was their first knockout round they'd won at a World Cup since 2010. Mikel Oyarzabal broke the deadlock and, in the 66th minute, Pedro Porro headed home a cross from Álex Baena for 2-0: his first goal for Spain. Oyarzabal himself wrapped up the 3-0 after a pass from Cucurella and now has four goals in the tournament, Spain's top scorer at the World Cup.

The stat: Unai Simón, a historic wall. The keeper didn't face a single shot on target and strung together another clean sheet. In doing so he surpassed Iker Casillas's World Cup shutout record: Spain has now gone four matches without conceding and with a solidity that firmly places them among the contenders. 61% possession and zero shots on target for the opposition say it all.
