Match by match, according to FIFA's official draw. No confusion.

| The opposition | Saudi Arabia. The team that knocked out Argentina in 2022… and Argentina went on to win the World Cup. |
| ✅ Result | Spain 4-0 Saudi Arabia. Lamine Yamal (10'), Oyarzabal brace (21', 24') and own goal from Tambakti (49'). The kind of response you frame and put on the wall. |
If Spain win the first two, they reach the third match already qualified and only playing for top spot. Which is no small thing: keep reading and you'll see why.

The first World Cup with 48 teams and 12 groups. Advancing to the Round of 16: the 12 group winners, the 12 runners-up and the 8 best third-placed teams (by points, goal difference, goals for and fair play). Only the 4 worst third-placed teams and all fourth-placed teams go out.
The "good" path. Spoiler: good doesn't mean easy; it means the scares come later.
Confirmed opponent: 🇦🇹 Austria (2nd in Group J). Argentina won the group, so Spain avoided a clash with the World Cup holders: a nice reward to start with. Austria came second after a mad 3-3 draw with Algeria on the final day.
Opponent: winner of 🇵🇹 Portugal – 🇭🇷 Croatia. Either Cristiano in his (probably) final World Cup, or the 2018 runners-up. The "softer" side of the bracket, they said.
Likely opponent: from the USA side, Bosnia, Belgium or Senegal. If it's USA in Los Angeles, 70,000 screaming "U-S-A". Bring earplugs.
Opponent: the survivor from the other half of the bracket where Brazil, France, Germany and Netherlands live. A giant, no doubt about it.
On the other side would come the survivor from the zone of Argentina, England, Mexico or Portugal. Dream away; back in 2010 it seemed like dreaming too.
The "Miami" path. Sounds like a holiday; it's the opposite.
Opponent: 1st in Group J → almost certainly ARGENTINA. European champions vs World Cup holders, with Messi and half the stadium in light blue and white. The match of the century… in the Round of 16. This is why the Uruguay–Spain game is no formality.
Likely opponent: Paraguay, Australia, Turkey, Egypt or Iran. If Spain get past Argentina, the bracket practically apologises with this matchup.
Likely opponent: Portugal or Colombia. Cristiano in his (probably) final World Cup: Hollywood script.
Opponent: the survivor from the Brazil–Mexico–England quarterfinal. Third visit to Atlanta: at this rate, we're moving there.
