Maracanã, 13 July 2014
At that World Cup Schürrle was Joachim Löw's impact substitute: he came off the bench and changed games. In the 7-1 against Brazil in Belo Horizonte he came on in the second half and scored twice.
In the final against Argentina, in extra time at 0-0, he burst down the left and put in a cross that Mario Götze controlled on his chest and volleyed in. It was the goal that won Germany their fourth World Cup.
Retirement
After winning the Premier League with Mourinho's Chelsea, he went through Wolfsburg, Dortmund, Fulham and Spartak Moscow. In July 2020 he announced he was quitting. He explained that he felt alone in a world of appearances and did not want to carry on. Very few world champions have left so early and with such clarity.

Dates, clubs, individual awards and photos come from Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, under free licences, and update themselves. Ages are not written anywhere: they are calculated the moment you open the page, so this page always shows the right age, this year and twenty years from now. If any of these players signs for another club or wins an award, their profile picks it up on its own. What is written by hand is the story and the judgement: who the day belongs to, and why.
