Pisa, Como and Juventus
He was born in Careggine, a mountain village in Tuscany, and started at Pisa, in Serie C. From there he moved to Como, and in 1975 Juventus signed him, where he stayed ten seasons.
He was a midfielder with endless running, able to mark the opposition's best player and reach the other box in the same move. In that Trapattoni Juventus, with Zoff, Gentile, Scirea and Cabrini, he won five scudetti and was one of the few footballers to take all three European trophies of the time: the UEFA Cup in 1977, the Cup Winners' Cup in 1984 and the European Cup in 1985.
The World Cup in Spain
Italy arrived at the 1982 World Cup amid criticism and got through the first round with three draws. In the second round, in Barcelona's group of death, they beat Argentina with goals from Tardelli and Cabrini, and then knocked out Brazil with Paolo Rossi's hat-trick.
The final was played on 11 July at the Santiago Bernabéu, against West Germany. Rossi opened the scoring in the 57th minute. Twelve minutes later Tardelli received the ball on the edge of the box and drove it with his left foot, almost falling over, across Schumacher into the far corner. 2-0.
The scream
What came next is what the whole world remembers. Tardelli set off towards the bench with his fists clenched, shaking his head, screaming and crying at the same time, as if he could not believe it. It lasted barely a few seconds and has become the most famous goal celebration in history.
He has explained it many times: that scream was everything he had dreamed of as a boy, scoring in a World Cup final, coming out all at once. Italy went on to win 3-1 and took their third World Cup, forty-four years after the second.
The dugout
He left Juventus in 1985, played for Inter and retired in Switzerland, at St. Gallen. As a coach his big success came with Italy's under-21s, with whom he won the 2000 European Championship. He was later Egypt's head coach and for years assistant to Giovanni Trapattoni, his old coach, with the Republic of Ireland.

A left-back with a shot you could hear from the stands. He won the French league with Monaco and in 2001 joined Liverpool, where he spent seven seasons.
He was there on the night of Istanbul, the 2005 Champions League final against Milan: at 3-0 down, the cross Steven Gerrard headed in to start the comeback was his. Three years later he got the cruel side: in the 2008 semi-final against Chelsea, in stoppage time, he headed into his own net, a goal that ended up costing the tie.
He is the most capped player in the history of the Norwegian national team.

Ally McCoist, the goalscorer of Ibrox
Rangers' all-time top scorer, with more than 350 goals in fifteen seasons, and a key figure in the nine titles in a row the club strung together between 1989 and 1997.
He won the European Golden Boot two years running, in 1992 and 1993, when the award went to the top scorer in any league on the continent. Years later he returned to Ibrox as manager.
