2 November: Alphonso Davies, from a refugee camp to Bayern

Buduburam, Edmonton, Vancouver
His parents escaped Liberia's civil war and he was born in the Buduburam refugee camp in Ghana. At five the family reached Canada and settled in Edmonton. There he started playing in a free programme for kids without means.
At fifteen he made his MLS debut for the Vancouver Whitecaps, and in 2019 Bayern signed him.
From winger to full-back
He arrived in Munich as a winger, but a spate of injuries in defence led the coach to try him at left-back. It was a revelation: his speed let him cover any mistake and get up and down the whole flank in seconds. In 2019-20 Bayern won everything, the Champions League included, and Davies was one of their breakout stars.
At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar he headed in, against Croatia, Canada's first ever goal at a men's World Cup.

Dates, clubs, individual awards and photos come from Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, under free licences, and update themselves. Ages are not written anywhere: they are calculated the moment you open the page, so this page always shows the right age, this year and twenty years from now. If any of these players signs for another club or wins an award, their profile picks it up on its own. What is written by hand is the story and the judgement: who the day belongs to, and why.
