He arrived at Montilivi in 2017 after playing for Levante, Racing, Espanyol and Middlesbrough, and became the club's symbol: he went down to the second division with them, stayed, brought them back up and captained the side that in 2024 qualified for the Champions League for the first time.

A penalty-box striker
He came out of Danubio, in Montevideo, and had a spell at Reggina in Italy before landing in Spain. He played for Levante, Racing Santander and Espanyol, and tried England with Middlesbrough. It was the same everywhere: an old-fashioned number nine, strong in the air and with a nose for goal. He played for Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup.
Staying in the second division
At Girona he was the goalscorer who kept the team in La Liga. When the club was relegated in 2019 he had offers to stay at the top level, and he stayed. In the second division he kept scoring, and in 2022 Girona went up through the play-offs.
2023-24 was the best season in the club's history: Míchel's Girona fought for the title for months and finished third, ahead of Barcelona. Stuani, by then thirty-seven and often coming off the bench, was the captain. Few footballers have identified so closely with a club they joined past thirty.
