Spain
After winning the European Cup with PSV he arrived at Valencia in the early nineties. In 1998 he took over at Real Madrid, with whom he won the Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo against Vasco da Gama, with that Raúl goal.

At the World Cup in Korea and Japan he coached the co-hosts, who had never won a World Cup game. Korea got through the group, knocked out Italy and in the quarter-final met Spain.
The game ended 0-0 after two Spanish goals were very controversially ruled out, and Korea won the shoot-out 5-3. In Spain that game still hurts. In Korea, Hiddink is a hero: he was made an honorary citizen and a stadium was named after him.
