Barcelona and Munich
He came through at Manchester United and in 1986 Terry Venables's Barcelona, who already had Gary Lineker, signed him. He did not settle: he scored little and the following year was loaned to Bayern Munich.
In Germany he left a unique anecdote. In November 1987 he played in the afternoon for Wales in Prague, against Czechoslovakia, and Bayern flew him back in a small plane so he could make their Bundesliga game against Mönchengladbach that same evening. Two official matches, for two teams in two countries, on the same day.
Rotterdam, 15 May 1991
He returned to Old Trafford in 1988 and became Alex Ferguson's go-to striker, a specialist in volleys and in holding the ball up against defenders a head taller.
In the 1991 Cup Winners' Cup final in Rotterdam the opponents were Cruyff's Barcelona. Hughes scored both goals in the 2-1, the second from an almost impossible angle. It was the first European trophy for an English club after the Heysel ban. He then won United's first two Premier League titles and a second Cup Winners' Cup with Chelsea. As a manager he took charge of Wales, Blackburn and Manchester City.

Dates, clubs, individual awards and photos come from Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, under free licences, and update themselves. Ages are not written anywhere: they are calculated the moment you open the page, so this page always shows the right age, this year and twenty years from now. If any of these players signs for another club or wins an award, their profile picks it up on its own. What is written by hand is the story and the judgement: who the day belongs to, and why.
