25 October: Pancho Sá, Mr Libertadores
Francisco Sá
«Mr Libertadores»
- Club Atlético Huracán Corrientes 1968
- Club Atlético River Plate 1969-1970
- Club Atlético Independiente 1971-1975 · 6 goals
- Boca Juniors 1976-1981 · 1 goals
- Club Atlético Gimnasia y Esgrima (Jujuy) 1981-1982
The King of Cups
He joined Independiente in the early seventies, when the Avellaneda club was building the nickname it still carries, the King of Cups. Sá was a hard defender, a man-marker who gave opponents no room to breathe, and with him Independiente won four Libertadores in a row, from 1972 to 1975, something no other club has done.
In 1973 Independiente also won the Intercontinental Cup in Rome, against Juventus, in a one-off match.
Boca and the World Cup
With the 1974 World Cup in Germany on his record, he moved to Boca Juniors, where Toto Lorenzo was building another cup-winning side. He won the 1977 and 1978 Libertadores, the first in Boca's history, and the 1977 Intercontinental Cup.
Six Libertadores in seven years with two different clubs. He also played for River and retired at Gimnasia de Jujuy in 1982.

Dates, clubs, individual awards and photos come from Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, under free licences, and update themselves. Ages are not written anywhere: they are calculated the moment you open the page, so this page always shows the right age, this year and twenty years from now. If any of these players signs for another club or wins an award, their profile picks it up on its own. What is written by hand is the story and the judgement: who the day belongs to, and why.
