Smooth as silk. Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver and booked their place in the last 16 with an authority that left no room for debate. Two strikes, one at the start of each half, and then it was just a matter of waiting for their next opponent. La Nati continue their quiet march forward.
The match. Switzerland gave Algeria no chance. In the 10th minute, following some slick work from Manzambi, Breel Embolo opened the scoring. And straight after the restart, in the 46th, Dan Ndoye pounced on a poor clearance to rifle a drive from the edge of the box and seal the 2-0. With the game settled, La Nati managed proceedings with ease.
The story. In Algeria's goal was Luca Zidane, Zinedine's son and an international with the "Desert Foxes". The Africans gave it a go, but ran into a solid Swiss side… and the Swiss even squandered a third when Rieder somehow missed with an open goal at his mercy.
What's next. Switzerland await the winner of Colombia-Ghana in the last 16 (played on 3 July). Algeria, who had sneaked in as one of the best third-placed teams, bow out of the tournament after a toothless display.
