Matchday 6 preview: Andorra-Sporting with pressure mounting, Castellón test Tenerife and Eibar travel to Elda

What's up, amigos? Let's be straight with it: Sporting arrive at matchday 6 with two heavy defeats weighing on their shoulders and an Andorra trip that looked like a "doddle" back in August but nobody's laughing about now in September. Meanwhile, the league marches on: Castellón strolling along unbeaten up top like it's a Sunday stroll, Eibar haven't put a foot wrong and Ceuta are still at zero—that's starting to look like Greek tragedy. And all this with the derby on the 27th looming large. Let's go, match by match.

No sugar-coating it: Sporting arrive in the Pyrenees fifteenth with 7 points (2 wins, 1 draw, 2 defeats) and with a strike force as dry as a bone in August: 2 goals in five matchdays, the league's worst attack tied with Valladolid. And the figure that really grinds my gears: four of five opening games at home and just 4 points from 12 at El Molinón. A 0-0 with Sabadell, a hard-fought 1-0 over Burgos, and back-to-back defeats: 0-2 to Girona and 0-1 to Eldense, who arrived without a win and with an interim manager. With a fixture list that gifts you four of five at your ground, with 20,000 fans in the stands, you'd normally be banking 8 or 9 points and sitting pretty. Wasting that is proper sad, mate.

And it's not bad luck: we created one clear chance in 90 minutes against Eldense, in the second minute, and then nothing. Larcamón's been five matchdays without cracking the attack code, substitutions come too late and the forwards are isolated. If the boss doesn't turn this around now, not in October, the patience of El Molinón—which is considerable—has its limits, and the derby's ten days away.

The hopeful bit is the other side of the coin: Sporting are unbeaten on the road. They've only played one away game, at Tenerife, and won it 0-1. One game isn't a run, but at this stage you grab what you've got.

Opposite them, an Andorra in no better spirits, actually worse: four straight defeats after thumping Ceuta in matchday one (5-1), 8 goals for and 10 against, and the latest came at home, 1-3 to Real Sociedad B. They're the league's most entertaining and most suicidal side, with Le Normand (out until February) and Gael Alonso (ankle fracture) gone for months. It's exactly the sort of match a goal-starved team needs to stop the bleeding… and also exactly the sort of match where if you're not sharp, you'll take another beating and the murmur from Gijón becomes a proper roar.

Sporting injuries: Andrés Ferrari (recurrence of fibula fracture, long-term), Gaspar Campos (hamstring recurrence, sidelined) and Hugo Guillamón (muscle injury, out of the squad). No suspensions. No ex-Sporting players or academy lads in Andorra's 26/27 squad: the only drama here is pure desperation.

🗓️ Friday: Albacete – Córdoba, the match of dread

The matchday opens with a direct scrap to avoid the drop: Albacete are second-bottom with 1 point (four defeats and Sunday's draw in Granada) and Córdoba are twentieth with 3, four defeats in five and a defence that's already shipped 12 goals. Both with the medical room full: Puertas, Pepe Sánchez and Obeng long-term at Albacete; Adilson and Fomeyem at Córdoba. Whoever loses starts looking down the table for real.

The B team come off a 1-3 win in Andorra and sit eighth with 8 points; Mallorca are third with 10 after snapping Sabadell's unbeaten run (2-0, Fuentes brace). Zubieta at midday and Mallorca without Jan Salas and Kalumba.

Castellón — Tenerife · 18:30

Saturday's big game. Castellón are unbeaten leaders with 13 points (4 wins and 1 draw) and only 2 goals conceded, after turning around the Montilivi match with Sienra (81') and Varo (86'). Tenerife are fourth with 10 and come off a 2-0 win over Leganés with a Enric Gallego brace. The team with the tightest defence taking on one already with 7 goals: the kind of match that's worth double.

Eldense — Eibar · 18:30

Four wins in a row and none of them conceding a goal: since losing that first one to Tenerife, Eibar have won 1-0, 0-1, 3-0 and 0-4, the last one at Balaídos on Monday. They're second with 12 and the league's top scorer with 10. They visit Eldense, who curiously are the last team to hurt Sporting: in Elda they'll be keen to see if lightning strikes twice.

Cádiz — Girona · 21:00

Cádiz are still the kings of the draw, and of disappointment: three draws and two defeats, haven't won yet, nineteenth. Girona, who lost at home to Castellón, arrive without Abel Ruiz, sent off in that match, and with Portu, Jastin García and Bryan Gil in the treatment room. Two teams that came down from the top flight and are nowhere near where anyone expected.

🗓️ Sunday: Oviedo heat up the derby at Sabadell

Sabadell — Real Oviedo · 14:00

Yeah, I've got to talk about them, seeing as next week is the derby. Oviedo are seventh with 8 points and have the best defence in the division: 1 goal conceded in five matches, and come off a 0-3 demolition at Zorrilla. Sabadell were the surprise unbeaten story until Mallorca knocked them down. With Ilyas Chaira (shoulder, until November) as the only blue absence.

Ceuta — Valladolid · 16:15

Ceuta are the only team in professional Spanish football without a point: five defeats, 2 goals for and 15 against. They host Valladolid, also hurting (4 points, 0-3 at home to Oviedo) and still without Lachuer (serving the second game of his ban), Guille Bueno, Dani Pérez, Thiago Ojeda and Miguel Rubio. Match of "I need to win at all costs" for both sides.

Almería — Celta Fortuna · 18:30

Almería are sixth with 9 points and two wins on the spin, but without Quim Junyent, suspended for a second yellow, or Gui Guedes (meniscus, until November). Celta Fortuna come off shipping four from Eibar at home.

Las Palmas — Burgos · 18:30

Las Palmas, fifth with 10, have the fullest treatment room in the league (seven absences, Recoba long-term among them) and still picking up points. Burgos, ninth with 8, come off a win at Ceuta after two draws in a row.

Leganés — Granada · 21:00

Butarque closes the matchday. Leganés with Morata fell 2-0 in Tenerife and are twelfth with 8; Granada, tenth with the same points, drew at home with Albacete. Franquesa, Del Cura, Diawara and Tejero remain out at Lega.
