Matchday 6 preview: Andorra-Sporting with pressure mounting, Castellón test Tenerife and Eibar travel to Elda

What's up, folks? Let's be straight with you: Sporting arrive at matchday 6 carrying two defeats in a row and a trip to Andorra that looked like a breeze back in August but now has everyone on edge in September. Meanwhile, the league does its thing: Castellón unbeaten up top strolling along like they're out for a walk, Eibar haven't put a foot wrong and Ceuta are frozen in defence—starting to look like a Greek tragedy. All this with the derby looming on the 27th. Let's dig in, match by match.

Let's not kid ourselves: Sporting arrive in the Pyrenees fifteenth with 7 points (2 wins, 1 draw, 2 defeats) and with a strikeforce drier than a bone in August: 2 goals in five matchdays, the league's worst attack tied with Valladolid. And the stat that's really got me wound up: four of the first five matches at home and only 4 points from 12 at El Molinón. A 0-0 with Sabadell, a 1-0 win over Burgos scraping through, then back-to-back defeats: 0-2 to Girona and 0-1 to Eldense, who came in winless with an interim manager. With a calendar gifting you four of five at your own place, with 20,000 fans in the stands, you're supposed to rack up 8 or 9 points and build a cushion. Throwing that away is downright heartbreaking, mate.

And it's not bad luck: it's that in 90 minutes against Eldense we created one clear chance, in the second minute, and then nothing. Larcamón's been unable to find an attacking pattern for five matchdays, substitutions come too late and the strikers are left out to dry. If the boss doesn't turn this around soon—not in October, now—the patience of El Molinón, which is considerable, has limits, and the derby's ten days away.

The stat that offers hope is the other one: Sporting are unbeaten away from home. They've only played one match outside El Molinón, at Tenerife, and they won it 0-1. One match isn't a run, but at this point you cling to whatever you've got.

Across from them, Andorra aren't in much better spirits, if anything worse: four defeats on the bounce after thrashing Ceuta in matchday one (5-1), 8 goals for and 10 against, and the latest at home, 1-3 to Real Sociedad B. They're the most entertaining and most reckless team in the league, with Le Normand (suspended until February) and Gael Alonso (ankle fracture) sidelined for months. It's exactly the sort of match a team in a scoring crisis needs to stem the bleeding… but it's also the sort of match where if you don't wake up, you take another battering and the murmuring in Gijón turns into actual noise.

Sporting's injury list: Andrés Ferrari (recurring fibula fracture, long-term), Gaspar Campos (recurring hamstring, working separately) and Hugo Guillamón (muscle injury, away from the group). No suspensions. No ex-Sporting players or academy prospects in Andorra's 26/27 squad: the drama here is purely about necessity.

🗓️ Friday: Albacete – Córdoba, a match where fear takes the wheel

The matchday opens with a direct scrap to avoid the drop: Albacete are second-bottom with 1 point (four defeats and Sunday's draw in Granada) and Córdoba are twentieth with 3, four defeats in five and a defence that's already shipped 12 goals. Both with packed infirmaries: Puertas, Pepe Sánchez and Obeng out long-term at Albacete; Adilson and Fomeyem at Córdoba. Whoever loses really starts looking down the table.

Castellón — Tenerife · 18:30

Saturday's big match. Castellón are unbeaten leaders with 13 points (4 wins and 1 draw) and only 2 goals conceded, after turning around their Montilivi game with goals from Sienra (81') and Varo (86'). Tenerife are fourth with 10 and come off a 2-0 win against Leganés with Enric Gallego netting twice. The team with the best defence up against one that's already scored 7: a match that counts double.

Eldense — Eibar · 18:30

Four straight wins and not a goal conceded in any of them: since losing their first match to Tenerife, Eibar have won 1-0, 0-1, 3-0 and 0-4, the last one at Balaídos on Monday. They're second with 12 and the league's top scorer with 10. They visit Eldense, who funnily enough were the last team to hurt Sporting: in Elda they'll want to see if the magic can strike twice.

Cádiz — Girona · 21:00

Cádiz remain the draw kings, and increasingly the heartbreak kings: three draws and two defeats, still haven't won, nineteenth. Girona, who lost at home to Castellón, arrive without Abel Ruiz, sent off in that match, and with Portu, Jastin García and Bryan Gil sidelined. Two teams relegated from the top flight stuck where nobody saw them ending up.

🗓️ Sunday: Oviedo warm up the derby in Sabadell

Sabadell — Real Oviedo · 14:00

Yeah, I've got to talk about them, since next week it's the derby. Oviedo are seventh with 8 points and have the best defence in the league: only 1 goal conceded in five games, and come off a 3-0 demolition in Zorrilla. Sabadell were the surprise unbeaten side until Mallorca brought them back down to earth. Ilyas Chaira (shoulder, out until November) is the only absentee for the blues.

Ceuta — Valladolid · 16:15

Ceuta are the only team in Spanish professional football without a point: five defeats, 2 goals for and 15 against. They host Valladolid, also battered (4 points, 0-3 at home to Oviedo) and still without Lachuer (serving the second of two suspensions), Guille Bueno, Dani Pérez, Thiago Ojeda and Miguel Rubio. A match of "I have to win by any means" on both sides.

Almería — Celta Fortuna · 18:30

Almería are sixth with 9 points and two wins on the bounce, but without Quim Junyent, suspended for a second yellow, or Gui Guedes (meniscus, out until November). Celta Fortuna come off conceding four to Eibar at home.

Las Palmas — Burgos · 18:30

Las Palmas, fifth with 10, have the league's most crowded infirmary (seven absentees, Recoba among them for the long term) and still keep picking up points. Burgos, ninth with 8, come off a win at Ceuta after two straight draws.

Leganés — Granada · 21:00

The matchday closes at Butarque. Leganés, Morata's side, lost 2-0 in Tenerife and are twelfth with 8; Granada, tenth with the same points, drew at home to Albacete. Franquesa, Del Cura, Diawara and Tejero remain out at Leganés.
