Girona thrashed Celta Fortuna this Saturday at Montilivi with a hat-trick from Vladyslav Vanat (5-1) to keep their brilliant run going, cement their playoff position and provisionally move to within two points of direct promotion. Girona controlled the ball from kick-off and quickly dominated the Vigo side's half, boasting over 75% possession in the opening stages. The rout was settled in just half an hour of play, a show of authority from the Catalans that left no room for debate. The first goal came in the 17th minute: Izan González won the ball in midfield, Mate delivered into the box and Unai Hernández laid it on a plate for Vanat. Just three minutes later Unai Hernández set up Vanat for a simple finish to make it 1-0, and three minutes after that Vanat returned the favour: a through ball from the Ukrainian and a low finish past the post for 2-0. The match had already swung Girona's way, but things got worse for the visitors when a red card changed everything. In the 25th minute, Pablo Meixús brought down Vanat inside the area. After a review, referee José Luis Guzmán Mansilla pointed to the spot and sent off the centre-back, and the striker made it 3-0 from the penalty with his left foot. Down to ten men and three goals behind, Celta Fortuna knew the collapse was just a matter of time. Before the break, Carles Pérez netted the hosts' fourth goal. The Catalans made full use of their numerical advantage to ramp up the punishment even further. Vanat completed his hat-trick in the 55th minute, courtesy of Mateu Morey, and Óscar Marcos made it 5-1 four minutes later. A gulf separates Girona in Segunda División from a Celta Fortuna side with no answer. There was one bright spot on the day: Stefan Bajčetić returned to action for the first time in over 500 days, ending a lengthy absence. Vanat delivered on the pitch what his manager asked of him, and Quique Álvarez saw his quest for better attacking cohesion rewarded with a display of strength that keeps direct promotion dreams very much alive.
