UD Almería let slip victory (2-2) against Real Oviedo this Saturday on matchday 11 of LaLiga Hypermotion, abruptly snapping what looked like an unstoppable run on the Mediterranean coast. Almería had reeled off seven straight wins at the top and came into the match as heavy favourites to brush aside an Oviedo side who travelled with ambition but lacking their rivals' winning edge. What unfolded was a devastating first-half performance from Almería and a second half that completely flipped the script. The Andalusian side looked to have settled it in front of their own crowd thanks to claws from Sergio Arribas and Miguel de la Fuente in the opening 45 (2-0). Arribas finished with his left foot from the centre of the box after a corner kick to break the deadlock on 15 minutes, and de la Fuente smashed in with his right foot from the centre of the area shortly after to seemingly wrap it up with two goals at the break. Control of the match, overwhelming possession and that home fortress which seemed impregnable made you think the next stop would be Castellón or Girona in the promotion race. But football, being the fickle mistress it is, had other plans.
When the second half rolled around, Oviedo managed to level things up in the closing stages of a match that changed complexion when barely ten minutes remained. Jacobo González struck with his left foot from outside the box on 87 minutes to claw one back and breathe life into the blues who suddenly found themselves back in it. Then came the cruellest moment for García Pimienta's men: on 89 minutes, Jorge Pulido bundled one into his own net, making it 2-2 final and tasting like defeat for Almería. An own goal when time was running out—the kind of gift nobody asks for and one that summed up a night of pure agony for the red-and-whites.
The draw leaves a bittersweet taste but reveals a truth that second-tier football never forgets: winning runs aren't forever, and any hungry side can punish a leader's moment of carelessness. Almería will still be favourites, but Oviedo proved that while there's time there's hope, even if it's the hope of the dying moments.
