📝 Match report

A header from Gelabert in the last minute of added time gave Sporting victory over Albacete (2-1), in a match where the Manchego side had equalized four minutes from the end, cancelling out an earlier goal from Argentine Alejo Sarco. Saturday's story at El Molinón was one of a Sporting side that didn't waste their final chance, when everything seemed headed towards an agonizing draw that Albacete deserved for their defensive resolve and their ability to respond in the closing stages. The Gijón outfit took the lead in the 16th minute when Alejo Sarco finished off a slick attacking move, capitalizing on a quality piece of play initiated by César Gelabert. It was a Sporting that controlled the tempo comfortably, convinced that that opening goal was enough to take all three points at home. However, Albacete didn't come to El Molinón as tourists: they dug in, defended with discipline, and in the closing minutes threw themselves desperately forward in search of an equalizer. Albacete found the leveller in the 86th minute with a header from Vallejo, unmarked at the far post, after a cross from the left. Suddenly, when the clock showed more than eighty minutes played, the match turned on its head. The Manchego side smelled blood, and at El Molinón the hearts of the fans sank seeing their team unable to seal the win. It looked like fate was written: a draw, one of those that leaves a bitter taste. But Sporting didn't read the script. When the match seemed destined for a stalemate, Otero won his duel around the opposition's box and opened it up for Pablo García, whose cross found Gelabert unmarked in the heart of the area to head home the 2-1 in the 94th minute. The stadium erupted. Madness took over El Molinón in the final moments, in that slow death where every second weighs like a stone and a goal rewrites all the stories. The win extends the Asturian side's run—three victories in a row now—and keeps them firmly in the upper reaches of the table, closing out their opponents, who sit bottom with nine defeats, five on the spin, and a single draw from their ten matches played. It was one of those golden victories that fuels the promotion dream, one of those the red-and-whites needed. Albacete left El Molinón with their hopes of picking up points unrealized, but at least they departed with their heads held high after competing and creating chances. Football, in its essence, rewarded the side that gave everything on the pitch until the final whistle, regardless of the opponent or the table.
