Girona FC won 2-0 against Albacete Balompié on matchday seven of LaLiga Hypermotion, but reading the match is far more complex than the scoreline suggests. Portu returned to action after ten months out injured and was greeted with a massive ovation at Montilivi, a detail that gave the evening that touch of emotion that football needs every now and then. That said, what happened on the pitch was a tale of two irreconcilable levels of clinical finishing: Girona's, lethal from the first minute, and Albacete's, who had chances to come back and even win, but ran into Paulo Gazzaniga in his finest form. Álex Moreno crossed from the left in the 6th minute, Javi Boñar flicked on at the far post and Abel Ruiz stretched to prod the ball into the back of the net. The goal arrived almost as a gift, quick and precise, exactly what Quique Álvarez's side needed to settle the nerves. Albacete didn't fall apart, quite the opposite: the La Mancha side began controlling the match, regularly threatening Gazzaniga's area and creating clear-cut chances through Álex Rubio, Víctor Valverde and Corpas. The Argentine goalkeeper's goal became the impenetrable frontier of the game. Just when it looked like Alba might take something, Carles Pérez raced down the right flank, crossed into the box and Van de Beek turned to strike a fierce left-footer that kissed the crossbar before going in. Two goals in 37 minutes, the match was already settled and Albacete kept searching, but precision deserted them. In the 53rd minute Corpas received unmarked in the area and struck it, but Gazzaniga pulled off a world-class save, the kind of intervention that extends a goalkeeper's career. Sergio Ortuño saw his second yellow card in the 90+1st minute for dangerous play, putting a cap on an afternoon where Albacete deserved far more in terms of chances created than the scoreline reflected. With this victory, Girona provisionally climb to third place with 13 points, while Albacete remain in the relegation zone with just one point from twenty-one possible. It was one of those nights where football was unjust, where those with the most couldn't find the back of the net and the team that needed least was clinical.
