Ipurua vibrated on Sunday with an Eibar side that was breaking historical records. The blue-and-red team were celebrating their sixth consecutive victory, something they'd never managed before in professional football, after beating Las Palmas 3-2 in a thrilling clash that left Eibar sleeping pretty at the top of the table. The match was a perfect X-ray of two opposing philosophies: a team that strikes first and forces their opponents to play catch-up from the off, and another that never threw in the towel despite being on the wrong end of a battering twice over. The islanders never gave up despite finding themselves two goals down on two separate occasions, but football doesn't always reward stubborn resistance without bite to back it up.
Ander Madariaga opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a strike from Adu Ares's pass that deflected off Iñaki González and left Caro stranded. Barely three minutes later, Álvaro Rodríguez made it two in the eighth minute, when Las Palmas still hadn't got their feet under the table. Eibar were playing with the ruthlessness of a team that knows every chance is a dagger. Eibar found the weak spot quickly enough: the left flank that Loiodice was patching up with gaffer tape following Clemente's injury. Valentín Pezzolesi pulled one back for Las Palmas in the 24th minute with a close-range finish from the right, restoring some dignity to the Canary Islanders early on. Javi Martón extended Eibar's lead in the 62nd minute with a strike from the centre of the box, reclaiming that two-goal cushion that would prove decisive. Jefté Betancor made it 3-2 in the 85th minute with a finish from the centre of the area, but there wasn't enough time left for a miraculous comeback. Iñaki González saw red for a second yellow in the 94th minute, capping off a bitter afternoon for UD that ended with seven yellow cards and a dismissal, compared to not a single caution for Eibar. Eibar, with well-deserved cunning, signed off on their night of glory.
