Real Sporting de Gijón secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Celta Fortuna at El Molinón, in a match marred by footballing uncertainty and discontent from the stands. Despite getting back to winning ways, the Gijón side were sent off amid boos and whistles for their poor performance on the pitch. Ahead of the clash, Guille Rosas received a commemorative shirt for his 200 appearances with Sporting. Rosas's early blunder would have demoralised anyone: he hesitated over a long ball aimed at Óscar Marcos and ended up heading it backwards, leaving the Celta striker clean through on Yáñez, whom he beat with a chip. So, barely eight minutes in, the Galicians were already breathing easy. But Sporting fought back, as the saying goes: a sloppy pass from the olive-coloured defence to their goalkeeper allowed Casas to steal the ball and slot home to an empty net for the 1-1 leveller in the 33rd minute, helped also by a medical emergency in the stadium's north stand, which was dealt with satisfactorily by emergency services and briefly paused proceedings. The best came in the dying embers of the first half: referee Cid Camacho showed a straight red to Celta defender Meixús following a VAR review for bringing down Antonio Casas. The Andalusian striker himself executed the free-kick in the 45+11th minute with a thunderbolt to make it 2-1 and seal his first brace in rojiblanco colours. With the extra man, Sporting dominated possession at the start of the second half and extended their lead in the 60th minute with a far-post drive from Rosas following a pass from Mata, who'd just come on. Game over, you'd think. However, despite being down to ten men, Celta Fortuna took control of the match from that point on and carved out several chances in the home box, the clearest coming past the 70-minute mark when Marín found himself one-on-one with Yáñez, but his effort sailed wide. Kibet pulled one back in the 78th minute with a powerful far-post drive from the edge of the box that caught Yáñez off guard, though the scoreline wouldn't budge in the closing stages. It could've been more dramatic, but Sporting didn't let it slip. A controversial VAR decision completely altered the course of the match—that call left the olive side with ten men for the entire second period and set up the set-piece situation that gave the Gijón lads the edge, frustrating what had been a notably strong showing from the visitors. Three points are worth their weight in gold when the chips are down, though El Molinón was reminded that winning while playing badly is only half a victory.
