Real Sporting de Gijón broke an 18-year curse without a win at the Nuevo Mirandilla after a Segunda División night that summed up everything that is combative, tactical and uninspiring about the fight for promotion. Sporting took all three points from the JP Financial with a goal in the 87th minute, so there's not much of a story beyond that: Cádiz and Sporting understood each other through a lack of attacking prowess, two teams far more concerned with not conceding than with dazzling anyone. Cádiz looked to dominate possession and inject some spark in the first half the way they had done in their thrashing of Leganés, but the Asturians' setup left them uncomfortable from early on. Equilibrium settled in as the first half progressed and after the break, the game was even for a good stretch of minutes without either side gaining the upper hand. The match looked set to end like one of those Segunda matchdays where the points get shared around by draw, that grey zone of the table that excites nobody. Then came the change. Pablo García, who came on in the 80th minute replacing Gaspar Campos, was the one who produced the decisive moment by recovering the ball after a poorly-defended throw-in, bearing down on goal with two changes of direction and finishing for goal, his shot deflecting off a defender before sneaking in. A typical action of the kind that separates the sharp from the sleepwalkers in the final stretch. Sporting's only shot on target in the game allowed them to certify maximum clinical efficiency, that defensive virtue which doesn't bring joy but settles the bill in the end. With the victory, the Gijón side climbed into the promotion playoff places for the step up to La Liga while the Cádiz lads tumbled back into the relegation positions. That's Segunda División for you: the better team doesn't always win, but rather the one who waits for their moment and doesn't miss it when it arrives. Sporting knew it, Larcamón had it clear, and in the closing stretch came the punishment. Streak over, curse broken and three points breathing a sigh of relief in the playoff zone; Cádiz carried on with their tale of disappointments, uncomfortable with their own shortcomings, and that's Segunda División in its rawest form.
