With over 23,000 spectators at the Carlos Tartiere and with Benjamín Noval, junior world and European cycling champion, performing the ceremonial kick-off, Real Oviedo pulled off a perfect heist against a rival who had been on fire: they halted Eibar's seven-game winning streak and knocked them off top spot with a 3-1 victory. The carbayones didn't need much faffing about to wrap it up; just three minutes in, Enzo Pérez twisted down the left wing, slipped the ball to Mikel Goti and the midfielder, with a crisp finish, beat Magunagoitia to make it 1-0, pretty much before anyone had sat down. A textbook start from the Asturian outfit, who really got the crowd going. Eibar didn't take long to respond and carved out clear chances in the first half; the visitors kept attacking, but Escandell stayed sharp in his box. Tension was building at the Tartiere. However, Real Oviedo made their chances count: they made it 2-0 in the 45th minute courtesy of Carlos Domínguez, and in the closing stages, with the armeros properly turning up the heat, a thunderbolt from the Galician centre-back sealed the 3-1. In between, Iván Gil pulled one back at 2-1 in the 74th minute to inject a bit of drama into the final minutes that, really, were already decided. Oviedo climbed the play-off ladder, while Eibar were left with that bitter taste of having played better but finding themselves punished on the scoreboard. Sometimes football's just plain cruel like that: some get the details right and others pay for their mistakes. The Asturians, mind you, had the smarts to come out absolutely fired up for the goal, and that's what kept them out of trouble. Against a rival with their winning run intact and hungry for top spot, that's what counts: getting the job done without drama, without theatre, without handing anything away. A bittersweet night for the carbayón faithful—a deserved win, though Eibar probably didn't deserve to lose quite like that.
