📝 Match report

Sporting kicked off the 2026/27 season hoping to make a statement, but El Molinón left wanting: a goalless draw against CD Sabadell, who arrived in Gijón with their heads screwed on far better than the Rojiblancos. The numbers don't lie, though it stings to say it: the Catalans threw their weight around on the stat sheet with fifteen shots to Sporting's eight, and while the home side enjoyed more possession (55.9%), they barely tested the keeper on five occasions compared to the visitors' two. Most damning was Sabadell's dominance down the wings, with eight corners that screamed where the real pressure was coming from—a far cry from Sporting's measly one. A matchday 1 of the sort that leaves a bitter taste at home, where Sporting had to do more defending than they bargained for—the opposition's twenty fouls exposed an uncomfortable Rojiblanca backline—and where the need to sharpen their finishing became crystal clear. Not the debut the fans dreamed of, but there are 41 matchdays left to turn this ship around.
