Eibar wanted it but Tenerife knew how to do it, and that makes all the difference at Ipurua in what turned out to be a disappointing opening matchday of a Hypermotion season that promises plenty of drama. The home side came out swinging with clear possession dominance (nearly 65%) and shots (16 to 7), but that's football for you: the numbers don't always match the scoreline. Enric Gallego opened the scoring early (minute 7) and although Jon Bautista levelled things up in the 35th, the Canaries were surgical in front of goal: Jesús Álvarez in the 44th and a clinical Iván Chapela in the 74th put the game to bed without mercy. Eibar had the ball, the intent and even seven corners to work with, but Tenerife proved that sometimes less is more, especially when you finish your chances properly. If last season we highlighted Eibar's solidity at home, this season they stumble right out of the blocks against a newly promoted side—and not just any side, but a heavyweight like Tenerife, who clearly didn't climb back to the second tier just to play around.
