Tenerife handed Heliodoro Rodríguez López a gift of a victory on Sunday in their return to Segunda División with a goal from Enric Gallego, cementing Canarian dominance after beating Almería, who are being tipped as promotion favourites.
Before the match, the stadium paid tribute to former captain Aitor Sanz, who performed the honour kick-off after being greeted with a guard of honour, and a minute's silence was observed in memory of Gonzalo Días Beitia and Juan Antonio Ortiz Mesa. The match was attended by 17,155 spectators.
The first half was one of clear technical control for the hosts. The encounter began with mutual respect between the sides, with Almería dominating possession but without generating much substance in play, while Tenerife left no openings for the Andalusians. Enric Gallego converted the clearest chance of the first half in the 31st minute following good work from Víctor Moreno, who delivered a perfectly weighted through ball for the striker to make no mistake at goal, scoring his second goal in two consecutive matchdays.
The restart was completely different. The hosts stepped up their intensity, with aggressive pressing and powerful ball-recovery that forced plenty of errors from Almería in possession, but García Pimienta knew how to react. The visiting team strung together two dangerous moves that could have levelled matters: a cross from Cipenga that drifted across the box without finding a finisher, and a Melamed effort that hit the woodwork. Almería found themselves under genuine siege in the final metres without finding the formula to level the match.
Tenerife took home an important victory to maintain their perfect return to the silver category, in a match controlled by the intensity and hunger of the home side over Xavi García Pimienta's UD Almería. Jesús Álvarez received a yellow card in the 9th minute and David Rodríguez was cautioned in the 52nd.
With this triumph, Tenerife remain alongside Las Palmas as the only teams with six points from the first two matchdays, while Almería suffer a significant blow to their aspirations having just been relegated from La Liga.
