Las Palmas got off to a winning start away at Ceuta, winning 0-2 at the Alfonso Murube on matchday two of LaLiga Hypermotion, and celebrated their 77th anniversary with that second success. But the match was far more than just a scoreline.
Players from both teams took to the pitch wearing shirts that read "Ceuta no se vende. Ceuta se defiende", a message reflecting the migration crisis affecting the city, and at kick-off the home side didn't play the opening thirty seconds in a show of solidarity. It was an afternoon where football shared the stage with political statement.
Ceuta arrived at the match having conceded a 5-1 hammering on their league debut against Andorra, looking to bounce back at home. However, despite showing greater attacking intent in the opening minutes with chances for Anuar in the 12th minute and Jordi Escobar in the 20th, they lacked the cutting edge. Las Palmas, far more clinical, went ahead providentially: Jesé Rodríguez fired after a move down the wing, Guille Vallejo blocked the ball, and Taisei Miyashiro pounced on the rebound to score.
The assistant referee flagged for offside, but the VAR corrected the decision and validated the goal.
Redru had a decent chance to level before the break, but his effort sailed over the crossbar, leaving the home side bruised but not broken heading into the dressing room.
After the restart, in the 55th minute, following a quick exchange on the edge of the box between Jesé, Manu Fuster and Jefté Betancor, the latter fired with a chance but Guille Vallejo produced a save of real quality. Despite that response, Ceuta had no luck in the final yards.
In the 68th minute, after winning the ball in midfield, Kirian sent Miyashiro racing forward to trouble Ceuta's defence; Fuster appeared in the centre, received the pass from the Japanese winger and from the edge of the box beat Vallejo to make it 0-2. With that second defeat, Ceuta strung together their second consecutive loss, repeating the same start to last season's campaign when they suffered three losses in their opening three matches.
Ceuta's assistant coach, Sergio Castaño, saw red in the 85th minute, an expulsion that capped off a miserable afternoon at the Murube. Las Palmas, meanwhile, proved they know how to grind it out without the fireworks, cash in on their moments and strike where it hurts. That, at the end of the day, is what separates the promotion contenders from the teams scrapping for survival.
