Sporting secured their first victory of the season against Burgos with a 1-0 win at El Molinón, which was decked out in red and white with a message that transcended football: Juanjo González, assistant coach of the Spanish national team, performed the ceremonial kick-off in recognition of Spain's World Cup-winning title.
Larcamón's side needed to shake off the flavourless draw against Sabadell from the previous matchday, and this Sunday they did it in the best way possible: quick, decisive and no messing about.
The home team started the match well, pushing forward into the opposition's half, and barely by the sixth minute Cuenca found the space to drive forward and penetrate into Burgos territory before threading a precise pass into space for Otero's run. He won the race against his marker and finished first time, curled in. An early goal, a weighty goal, a response to a crowd that was desperate to see that immediate reaction.
Sporting delivered a fantastic performance against one of the sides aspiring to be at the top, with excellent collective work and a standout display from Andrés Cuenca, who gave a masterclass in how to defend and thread balls into the gaps.
Burgos, who arrived motivated after their victory against Córdoba, were never in the game.
Once again, the Asturians showed that at home, with character, they know how to hurt opponents. The attendance was 23,287 spectators, and El Molinón vibrated from minute one as a response to that opening victory the team craved.
This is how Sporting start strong, this is how they move away from that early draw, this is how they get a season up and running that shows promise.
