Bland football set the tone at Gran Canaria tonight, a match that will pass through the annals of Hypermotion without leaving an emotional mark but which, at the end of the day, pinched valuable points from both title contenders. Las Palmas and Leganés drew 0-0 at Estadio Gran Canaria, on matchday 4 in which ambitions of staying at the top of the table clashed with defensive blocks, fear of defeat and a lack of cutting edge in attack. The encounter arrived heavy with emotional baggage on the islands, where UD came off a hammering at Montilivi against Girona (5-2) and desperately needed to shake off that blow. Leganés, meanwhile, visited the Canaries riding high after snatching a late winner against Eldense, and with a market signing that grabbed all the headlines: Álvaro Morata could make his debut with the pepineros at Gran Canaria, the most media-relevant move in the Segunda División.

The Madrid side, however, imposed themselves on proceedings from the opening moments. Morata won a ball over the top of the defence barely a minute in and Churripi had to bail out to prevent a goal, an early warning that set the tone for the whole affair. Las Palmas completed a sleep-inducing performance against a Leganés who were the better side overall, leaving the hosts uncomfortable for large stretches. Leganés controlled possession, set up camp intelligently and snuffed out any dangerous build-up play; the yellow shirts' circulation was painfully slow and finding space felt like an impossible mission. The hosts barely troubled the goalkeeper once across the whole match, a stat that perfectly sums up their offensive impotence festival.

Not even set pieces went the locals' way as they'd hoped. Miyashiro had the clearest opening on 31 minutes from a corner, but his shot was too soft and Luca Zidane got there in time. On the other side, Leganés came closer to breaking the deadlock on several occasions: Naim had the 0-1 at his feet after another ball over Ignasi Miquel's head, but failed to get his body right and squandered the chance. UD improved after the break but without creating the danger that Leganés showed throughout. In the end, neither side had the bottle or the ability to force the issue to its conclusion. The point doesn't taste terrible but it'll force Las Palmas not to slip up at Cádiz next matchday, a result that seems to satisfy no one but which, deep down, avoids worse disasters in a Segunda División where points are pure gold even when the football looks like tonight's offering: grey, shut-shop and dull as a rainy Monday in Oviedo.
