A minute's silence was held in memory of 'Canito', a former yellow-shirt player between 1968 and 1972, before a match that Cádiz needed to win more than they needed to breathe, though Real Valladolid's desperation was hardly any less. Fran Escribá's side arrived in Cádiz having lost their opening two fixtures without scoring a single goal. Albert Celades' yellow outfit, meanwhile, had collected two draws and were desperate to break that streak. The Nuevo Mirandilla brought together 15,480 spectators hoping to finally see their heroes triumph.
The first surprise came from Valladolid's dominance. El Pucela came out swinging and it didn't take long before they threatened the home area, with a Yeray corner and a Luis Chacón header producing the first scares for the Cádiz faithful. But in the midst of that visiting pressure, Julien Ponceau hauled down Jandro Orellana inside the Valladolid box and the referee pointed to the spot. Izeta converted the penalty in the 17th minute to make it 1-0, slotting it across Álvaro Aceves with a perfectly-placed finish. The Basque striker was opening his goal account for the yellows at precisely the worst possible moment for El Pucela.
Real Valladolid took the blow but came straight back at them. As the visitors hunted the equaliser, goals were ruled out throughout the match, which muddied a first half packed with refereeing interruptions. Before the break, Chacón headed into an empty net after a rebound from the post following a Cádiz defensive howler that Ezkieta couldn't salvage in the 42nd minute, levelling things up. Goalkeeper Ezkieta proved crucial in keeping Cádiz afloat against a side that looked superior for much of the encounter.
The second half unfolded with similar stubborn intensity. VAR took centre stage: three goals were chalked off in total, with Dilan Zárate finding the net only to see it disallowed and Luis Chacón hitting the target again, though his second effort was ruled out for offside. Despite the visitors having the clearest chances, neither side could break the deadlock. The match ended in Cádiz's third straight draw, who still haven't tasted victory this season. Valladolid, meanwhile, got off the mark in the points column, though they couldn't find that killer touch at JP Financial.
A match that left a bittersweet taste in Cádiz. The fans wanted a win; the teams wanted points; the competition asked for empathy. And the Nuevo Mirandilla, as always, wrote its own story.
